Last Month's Games: "The DOOM Which Came To Gotham"

Last month I played quite a few games. I didn't really like any of them. So sad. Let's tear them to shreds. Except for Nidhogg. Nidhogg was great. Anyway, I have Vanilla Coke in my fridge, and tomorrow's Saturday and I'm on-call, so... I don't really know where I'm going with this, honestly. It's been The Longest Week. I've been playing Darkest Dungeon instead of writing. I'm a terrible author.

DOOM 3

The best part of DOOM 3 is the included DOOM and DOOM II that come with the BFG edition. Otherwise it's a terrible DOOM game and a mediocre horror/survival shooter. Like, gunplay feels slow and clunky, the monsters/enemies aren't scary... DOOM, for me, is a fast-paced shooter, not a slow slog through dark narrow rooms. Just, just don't.

Nidhogg

Hey man, this is great. 2-D sidescrolling dueling game like a more modern Joust? I like it. Controls are tight, soundtrack is good, graphics are evocative yet crisp.

Batman: Arkham Origins

Okay, seriously? How many games is Joker going to be the primary villain in? Can’t we mix it up a LITTLE bit? Because, seriously. The plot is becoming so retreaded it’s a completely different tire at this point. Anyway. Mechanically, this is pretty much identical to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Spiritually, it’s a soulless ripoff. Everything just feels slightly…hollow. Like a marching band that’s just slightly out of step. Not only that, but it feels…unfair. As if all the combat encounters are skewed against you. The predator encounters aren’t quite so bad, but still pretty annoying. There are a lot of moments where I just went… “Really? Really?” Just…overall, it’s not good. It’s passable. Not good. I am unhappy.

Bound by Flame

Here’s the thing. Aside from a bit of Game of Thrones, Witcher, and Dragon Age mixed in, Bound By Flame is pretty interesting. It’s something a bit…different. The problem is, it’s not quite polished enough. The combat is a bit too clunky, the dialogue is a bit too stiff… It could be a really good game in the Witcher style, but it just doesn’t quite mesh. I can’t get into it. Sorry.

Warframe

In theory I should like this game. Fast-paced, acrobatic gun-and-sword combat, upgrades, multiplayer… But it just kind of feels like a sped-up Mass Effect. Nothing’s clicking. I’ve got better things to do with my time. Like sleep. Also the tutorial is atrociously bad.
